Yoga and Diabetes- An Alternate Therapy

It is rightly said that, understanding is the first step towards change. In order to follow the ways to attain good health, understanding them is the first step. Good health is acquired when one follows a healthy diet, regular exercise, positive thinking, unhurried pace of living, and a sublime faith in the divine. Disease manifests in the body when nature's health laws are transgressed.

Yogic discipline with its asanas, pranayama, and meditation is a way to good health. This ancient therapy helps in treating diseases, which eventually improves personal efficiency and assists in achieving mental peace. When yoga becomes a lifestyle, it effects a radical transformation in an individual. Any health conscious person would turn to yoga and reap the benefits it offers.

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition when the pancreas in the human body fails to produce insulin. Incidentally, insulin is the hormone that converts the sugar in the food into energy. Insufficient secretion of insulin by pancreas results in excess glucose level in the bloodstream, resulting in diabetes. The blood glucose is required to be used up to provide energy and fuel to the body, in order to do its work. If the level of glucose is high, it eventually affects the body parts.

A person suffering from diabetes portrays symptoms, which could be fatigue, hazy vision, excessive thirst, weight loss and an increase in appetite.

Causes of Diabetes

Overweight
Stress
Genetic factors
Lack of exercise

Food or diet plays a significant role in the life of a diabetic. Selective, healthy food with adequate intake of fruits and vegetables along with regular exercise helps to keep diabetes in control.

Yoga to the Rescue

Yoga provides an alternate source of healing for diabetes. Yoga helps to strengthen the immune system, improves blood circulation and the flow of vital energy or prana to the internal organs of the body. The secretion of stress hormones, due to faulty diet, hectic lifestyle or wrong thinking is controlled by the practice of yoga.

Effect of asanas on blood sugar level

Yogic exercises cause the muscles to absorb the excess glucose in the blood, thereby reducing the blood sugar level. They help the pancreas and liver to function effectively, which regulates the blood sugar levels. Asanas help in rejuvenating the pancreatic cells, thereby assisting insulin secretion. The muscular movements also help in bringing down the blood sugar levels. Asanas induce relaxation, which also plays a key role in the healthy functioning of the internal organs of the body.

Yogic exercises are perhaps the only exercises that bring us close to the inner being or the soul, which is essentially spiritual in nature. Practitioners of yoga, pranayama and meditation, usually find a shift in their attitude towards life. They radiate good health and positive energy .

A profound understanding of yoga enables introspection. When attention is turned inwards, it effects a radical change in our beings, manifest as inward balance and poise. As peace fills our being, the body begins to function in harmony, which is a sign of good health.

The results of yogasanas are best when they are executed without exertion, in a non-striving manner. Ideally, the movements should be fluid and harmonious. The ease, with which yoga must be practiced, is perhaps best expressed by Deepak Chopra, a renowned leader in the field of mind-body , who has said,

Grass doesn't try to grow, it just grows.
Fishes don't try to swim, they just swim.
Flowers don't try to bloom, they simply bloom.
Birds don't try to fly, they simply fly.

The natural poses assumed in yoga practice bring peace to the mind of the practitioner. Asanas can be practiced with any classical music played at the background. They make the practice enjoyable. It is important to be conscious of the movements and understand the limits of ones own flexibility. Straining beyond ones own means is certainly not recommended.

Asanas for diabetes

Paschimotasana

Paschimotasana is a sitting asana also referred to as the 'forward seated bend'. This asana is good for those suffering from diabetes. It is known to stimulate the functioning of the internal organs like liver, pancreas and kidney.

Steps

1. Sit on a yoga mat in a comfortable position with legs outstretched in front.

2. Bend your head to touch your knees and exhale completely.

3. Grasp the toes with your fingers. Maintain this position for a few breaths and inhale when you return to the original position.

4. Repeat this asana 2-3 times.

Mayurasana-The peacock pose

This asana tones up the internal organs like the liver, pancreas and kidney. It also helps to cure stomach disorders, which improves digestion.

Steps

1. Lie on your abdomen.

2. With the support of the palms on the floor, lift the whole body above the ground. The body remains parallel to the ground

Note

This asana may appear daunting to a beginner, but with guidance from a yoga expert and regular practice, the asana becomes child's play.

Shalabhasana- The Locust

This asana helps to cure acidity. It is also known to relieve nervous tension and indigestion.

Steps

1. Lie on the floor with the abdomen touching the mat.

2. Rest your chin on the floor with arms at the sides. The heels and toes must be held together.

3. Inhale and lift both the legs above the floor. While lifting the legs, pressure must be applied on the fists.

4. Maintain this position for a few seconds and come back to the original position.

5. Relax and feel the stretch on the muscles of the back.

Note

Always use a yoga mat for sitting postures.

Yogic Breathing for Diabetes

All life is energy or prana, which descends into the human body in a rhythm. It is this life force that makes our heart beat and energizes the various systems and organs of our body.

Through pranayama, this prana can be controlled. The vital force and life currents within the body are controlled through pranayama. This flow of energy helps to do away with the diseases and toxins in the body.

Bahya Pranayama or External Kumbakha

Kumbakha is the retention of breath. In this pranayama, the breath is retained outside for a longer duration than inhalation and exhalation. The ratio of inhalation, exhalation and retention is 3: 6:12

Steps

1. Sit in a cross-legged position.

2. Inhale through the left nostril, by closing the right to the count of 3.

3. Immediately exhale through the right nostril to the count of 6.

4. Retain the breath outside or in other words remain breathless to the count of 12.

5. Repeat the pranayama with the same count from the right nostril.

Period of Meditation

Steps

1. Sit in a comfortable position and close your eyes.

2. Mentally chant 'Om' and concentrate on the sound. Thoughts would rush in endlessly, but attention should be focused on the chant.

3. Do this till a feeling of peace envelopes you.

BOONDI GULAB JAMUN

Ingredients
For boondi

Gram flour (besan) 2 cups
Ghee To deep fry
Sugar 4 cups
Melon seeds 1 tsp
Green cardamom powder 1 tsp
Saffron a pinch
For gulab jamun
Khoya/mawa, grated 2 cups
Refined flour (maida) 5 tbsps
Cottage cheese (paneer), grated 4 tbsps
Baking powder ½ tsp
Ghee To deep fry
Sugar 4 cups

Method

1.Mix gram flour with a little water to make a smooth and semi thick batter.
2.Heat sufficient ghee in a kadai and pour batter into it through a perforated ladle to make boondis.

3.Mix sugar with five cups water and boil to make one string syrup. Mix in the boondi, melon seeds, green cardamom powder and saffron. Keep aside.

4.To make gulab jamuns, mix khoya, refined flour, paneer and baking powder and knead into a dough using half a teaspoon of water.

5.Heat sufficient ghee in a kadai on low heat.

6.Prepare small smooth balls with no cracks and fry in hot ghee on low heat till golden brown.

7.Prepare a thin syrup with sugar and four cups of water. Soak gulab jamuns in it.

8.Remove from the syrup after nearly half an hour and cover each one of them with boondi and form into a laddoo.
9.Chill and serve cut in halves.

SUJI AUR BADAM KA HALWA

Ingredients

Semolina (rawa/suji), roasted 1 cup
Almonds, blanched and peeled 2½ cups
Ghee ½ cup + 1 tablespoon
Sugar 2½ cups
Milk 1 cup
Saffron few strands
Green cardamom powder 1½ teaspoons

Method

1.Pat the almonds dry. Keep aside twenty almonds for garnish and grind the rest to a coarse powder.

2.Heat half a cup of ghee in a pan. Add almond powder and sauté over medium heat till golden.

3.Add semolina and mix well. Add sugar and mix. Add milk and stir to mix well. Let it cook for eight to ten minutes.

4.Add saffron and stir. Continue to cook till the halwa thickens.

5.Add green cardamom powder and stir to mix well.

6.Add one tablespoon of ghee to finish off. Garnish with reserved almonds and serve hot.

Ghee 1 cup
Sugar 2¾ cups

1.Take coconut, ghee, sugar, gram flour and milk in a deep pan and mix. Grease a thali.
2.Cook on medium heat, stirring continuously, till thick. As it begins to leave the sides of the pan transfer the mixture onto the greased thali and spread. Smoothen the top and let it set.
3.When cooled cut into squares or diamonds and remove the pieces.
4.Store in an airtight container.

1.Cut the pistachios and almonds into thin slivers.
2.Heat ghee in a kadai, add the besan and roast it on low heat stirring continuously for ten to fifteen minutes or till it starts changing colour and gives out a nice aroma.
3.Add cardamom powder, almonds and pistachio slivers and mix. Remove from heat and let it cool.
4.Add the powdered sugar and mix well.
5.Grease a tray with ghee. Pour the besan mixture and spread it evenly on the tray.
6.Let it cool and then cut into square and diamond shaped pieces and serve. While storing keep in an airtight container.

...this season by bearing in mind the first aid required for burn and eye injuries, just in case

The lure of using crackers is irresistible. But it doesn't take long before this festival of lights can turn into a nightmare of sorts for many with people suffering from burn and eye injuries. Here, we offer tips on first aid.

Burn Injuries

With the increase in the number of firecrackers, burn cases have also increased over the years. Dr Milind Wagh, plastic surgeon, consultant plastic aesthetic and reconstructive surgeon, Dr L H Hiranandani Hospital offers quick measures to treat burns.

Recognising the burn type

A first degree burn is superficial. The skin turns red in colour but the sensation is intact. Second degree burns cause blisters on the skin. The skin turns pink at the periphery. Third degree burns result in skin death. The skin is white and without sensation.

First-aid for burns

• Hold the burned area under cold running water for at least five to 10 minutes or until the pain subsides. Cooling the burn reduces swelling by conducting heat away from the skin.

• Remove clothing from the burned area if it is silk or nylon because it tends to stick. Do not just peel off just because the skin can also come off

• Do not clean the area with anything other than water

• Do not give unsupervised painkillers. You can give a child Paracetamol if the child is in great pain

• Do not cover it with a bandage or a sterile gauze pad. Do not use cotton as it may stick to the wound

• Consume water in any form possible to avoid further tissue damage

• Use cool compresses till the doctor arrives or the patient is taken to the hospital

• Apply an antiseptic cream available in the market. Do not neglect because superficial burns can turn out to be first degree and second degree burns.

Eye Injuries

Apart from burn injuries, eye injuries are something which is another common concern during Diwali. Most of the eye injuries may result in permanent loss of vision. Dr Anand Shroff, opthalmalogist, Shroff Eye Hospital helps avoid these problems.

First-aid for eye injury

• Do not rub your eyes

• Use the corner of a soft clean cloth to draw particles out, or hold the eyelids open and flush the eyes with water

• If a particle is large or stuck in the eye, do not attempt to remove it.

• Keep eyes closed and go to the eye doctor immediately

• If there is any chemical that has entered the eyes, immediately irrigate the eyes and under the eyelids, with water, for 30 minutes and consult a doctor.

Why are Fireworks dangerous?

• Sparklers are one of the major causes of firework injuries requiring hospitalisation. Sparklers are dangerous because they burn at a temperature hot enough to melt gold (1,800° F)

• Most fireworks contain gunpowder, which causes these devices to explode. Because fireworks are unpredictable, injuries can occur even if the person is careful or is under supervision

• Bottle rockets are among the most dangerous fireworks available today. They account for the majority of all fireworks injuries that lead to permanent eye damage.

Hi God, it is me again. You know, I have this group of friends that I need you to take care of and watch over. They are not from my town and most are not even in the same state. In fact, there are some that live in a different country. They are scattered all over the world.

I met them on the internet. WE send emails to each other, we chat and some I have even spoken to on the phone, but most of them we will never meet face to face. However, there are a few that I have been lucky enough to share a real hug with. It does not matter if we have met or not, these people are my friends.

There is so much going on the world, and it scares me. You see, I care about these friends that I have met and God, that is why I am asking you to please watch over them and protect them. I would never imagined that I could care and even love someone, that I have only met online. The truth is loving and truly caring about person begins in the heart and it stays inside of their heart.

I ask you God, to give my friends happiness and peace. Please take care of them and guide them. Through the internet I have been so lucky to have friends all over the world. I have learned that although some of us have different beliefs and we live in differently, we are so much alike, all hoping for the same things in life, true happiness.

Please God, bless each one of these friends that have touched my life in one way or another. Forgive those, God, that have hurt others, help them to learn the true meaning of Love and Friendship. I know that each person I have met through the internet has been placed in my path for a reason. Proof of what can happen if a wife or girlfriend drags her husband or boyfriend along shopping. This letter was recently sent by a leading super market's Head Office to a customer in Oxford .

Dear Mrs. Murray,

While we thank you for your valued custom and use of the Tesco Loyalty Card, the Manager of our store in Banbury has requested permission to prevent you and your family from shopping with us, unless your husband desists from certain behaviors in our premises. Our store manager has agreed to wait till you have an opportunity to reply and explain the behavior of your husband in our store. Below is a list of offences over the past few months, all verified by our surveillance cameras. Our footage does not show you in the company of your spouse so we have concluded that you are completely unaware of what your husband does while you are shopping elsewhere in the store. Below is a list of incidents captured by our cameras and they clearly show your husband:-

1. June 15: Took 24 boxes of condoms and randomly put them in people's trolleys when they weren't looking.

2. July 2: Set all the alarm clocks in House wares to go off at 5-minute intervals.

8. October 4: Looked right into the security camera; used it as a mirror, picked his nose, and ate it.

9. November 10: While appearing to be choosing kitchen knives in the House wares aisle asked an assistant if he knew where the antidepressants were.

10. December 3: Darted around the store suspiciously, loudly humming the "Mission Impossible" theme.

11. December 6: In the kitchenware aisle, practiced the "Madonna look" using different size funnels.

12. December 18: Hid in a clothing rack and when people browsed, yelled "PICK ME!" "PICK ME!"

13. December 21: When an announcement came over the loud speaker, assumed the foetal position and screamed "NO! NO! It's those voices again."

For those purists who were appalled by the idea of Paro and Chandramukhi coming together in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's interpretation of the classic , Sudhir Mishra's version of the epic which he starts shooting on October 20, promises to deliver a jolting blow.

In Mishra's revisionist version of the re-located classic the doomed hero not only gets Chandramukhi, he also lives, arguing that life without Paro is as good as death.

But Devdas without his death?!

The film's producer Pritish Nandy seems pretty prepared to take on the purists. "Classics mutate with time. They change so many colours. I had decided to do our own version of Devdas after I had seen Sanjay Leela Bhansali's version.

As a Bengali I couldn't connect with his lavish operatic mood. Saratchandra' s version of the tale was all about austerity, holding back rather than unleashing a torrent of emotions."

The kingpin of Pritish Nandy Communication seems undaunted by the criticism that's awaiting him. "Fear of falling has never stopped me from climbing higher. Our Devdas goes back to its literary roots, though it's set in contemporary times."

The games SRK plays...

Shah Rukh Khan is one of the greatest entertainers of our times...

He has played many roles -- from the cute lover boys roles, to obsessive lovers, from playing a ghost to a teacher. But more often than not, his character has always been 'sporty.'

His latest film Chak De! India sees him playing a hockey coach, and we thought it was a good time to have a look at SRK and his sporting moves.

Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna

Shah Rukh, as Dev Saran, was a failed football player, who lost his career to an accident. The film saw him walking with a limp, something that SRK had never attempted before.

Later, he turns his attention to coaching his son.

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

Even though basketball is not a very popular sport in India, Karan Johar made sure the game looked interesting in his directorial debut, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.

SRK and a very tom-boyish Kajol played the game convincingly, as college-goers. But it looked even better when the duo met after eight years, and challenged each other to a game. Sari-clad Kajol won.

Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge

The longest running film ever in history of Indian cinema introduces an aggressive Shah Rukh playing rugby.

Though the rest of the film does not show SRK playing the game, this scene was mindblowing.

The music, dialogue, performances and direction by debutant Aditya Chopra has made the film an all-time classic.

Baazigar

One of SRK's first big hits, Baazigar showed the actor in three characters -- a nerdy boyfriend, a flamboyant car racer, and a killer.

SRK pretends to be a car racer, and smartly loses the race to his prospective father-in-law, Dilip Tahil, to win over his confidence, and his daughter Kajol's heart.

Chamatkar

Shah Rukh plays a cricket coach for this one. Teamed up with Naseeruddin Shah, who plays a ghost, Shah Rukh's team wins the match, thanks to Naseer's magic.

The film's heroine was Urmila Matondkar.

Pardes

Subhash Ghai's film told the story of Amrish Puri, who comes to India in search of a bride for his son, Apoorva Agnihotri. As fate has it, the girl (Mahima Chaudhry) falls in love with SRK instead.

But a distant cousin demans to marry Mahima, which upsets her. To solve the problem, a kabbadi match is organised between Shah Rukh, Apoorva and their team, versus the cousin and his team. Of course, SRK's team wins.

Guddu

SRK, playing Guddu, plays a popular college student, who is loved by one and all. He's very good in sports as well.

The story goes that Guddu is in love with Manisha Koirala's character. One day, Manisha falls from a horse, and loses her eye sight. Shah Rukh blames himself for this. At the same time, he is diagonsed of brain tumour. He plans to donate his eyes after his death but miraculously, he is cured. Deepti Naval, who plays his mother, donates her eyes after she dies... ... .

Size: 0.17 sq. mi. (0.44 km²)
Population: 783 (2005 census)
Location: Rome, Italy

The size of a golf course, the Vatican City [wiki | official website] is the smallest country in the world. It's basically a walled enclave inside of Rome, Italy. It's so small that the entire country does not have a single street address.

The Vatican City may be small, but it is very powerful. It is the sovereign territory of the Holy See, or the seat of the Catholic Church (basically its central government), which has over 1 billion people (about 1 in 6 people on the planet) as constituents.

The Vatican City was created in 1929 by the Lateran Treaty (which was signed by one of history's most repressive dictators, Benito Mussolini) and is ruled by the Pope, basically a non-hereditary, elected monarch who rules with absolute authority (he's the legislative, executive and judiciary all rolled into one) - indeed, the Pope is the only absolute monarch in Europe.

Another unique thing about the smallest country in the world is that it has no permanent citizens. Citizenship of the Vatican City is conferred upon those who work at the Vatican (as well as their spouses and children) and is revoked when they stop working there.

The Vatican City is guarded by the smallest and oldest regular army in the world, the Swiss Guard [wiki]. It was originally made up of Swiss mercenaries in 1506, now the army (also personal bodyguards of the Pope) number 100, all of which are Catholic unmarried male Swiss citizens. The Swiss Guard's Renaissance- style uniform was commonly attributed as to have been designed by Michelangelo - this was actually incorrect: the large "skirt" pants were a common style during the Renaissance. Only their uniforms seem antiquated: most of the Swiss Guards carry pistols and submachine-guns.

The official languages of the Vatican City are Latin and Italian. In fact, its ATMs are the only ones in the world that offer services in Latin! And here you thought that Latin is a dead language…

For a country that has no street address, the Vatican City has a very efficient post office: an international mail dropped in the Vatican will get there faster than one dropped in Italy just a few hundred yard away - in fact, there is more mail sent annually per inhabitant from this country (7,200 mails per person) than anywhere else in the world.

The Vatican City has a country code top level domain of .va - currently there are only 9 publicly known .va domains [wiki]. It also has a radio broadcasting service, called Vatican Radio [wiki], which was set up by Guglielmo Marconi (the Father of Radio) himself!

The country's economy is unique: it is the only non-commercial economy in the world. Instead, the Vatican City is supported financially by contributions of Catholics worldwide (called Peter's Pence - hey, even the Pope accepts credit cards!), the sale of postage stamps and publications, and tourism.

Lastly, as an ecclesiastical paradise, the Vatican City has no taxes.

2. Monaco

Size: 0.8 sq. mi. (1.96 km²)
Population: 35,657 (2006 estimate)
Location: French Riviera on the Mediterranean

Monaco [wiki | official website] is the second smallest country on Earth (it's roughly the size of New York's Central Park), yet it's the most densely populated (23,660 people per km²). Actually, Monaco used to be much smaller than it is now - about 100 acres were reclaimed from the sea and added to its land size. At the narrowest, Monaco is only 382 yards wide!

The Principality of Monaco, its formal name, means that the territory is ruled by a prince. For the last seven centuries, Monaco was ruled by princes of the Grimaldi family from Genoa. (The whole thing started one night in 1297 when François Grimaldi disguised himself as a monk and led a small army to conquer the fortress guarding the Rock of Monaco. The coat of arms of the Grimaldi bears the image of monks with swords!) Now, the Prince shares legislative authority with a National Council.

In 1861, Monaco relinquished half of its territory to France in exchange for cash and independence. When the reigning prince realized that most of Monaco's natural resources were on the land that got bartered away, he decided to bet the whole economy on … what else, gambling (see, casinos aren't only for American Indians, it's a time-tested, universal solution!)

And so began Monte Carlo [wiki], a region of Monaco well known for its glamorous casinos (a setting for Ian Fleming's first James Bond Novel Casino Royale [wiki]) and its Formula One Grand Prix.

In 1918, Monaco entered a treaty with France for military protection - the treaty, however, also stipulated that Monaco would lose its independence (and become French) should the reigning Grimaldi prince died without leaving a male heir! When Prince Rainier III took over, he was a bachelor and most Monegasques (that means people of Monaco) were gloomy about the country's future. However, he ended up marrying Hollywood actress Grace Kelly [wiki] - the marriage not only produced a male heir, it also helped burnish Monaco's image as a glamorous place to be for the wealthy. (Monaco can rest easy now, a new treaty with France stated that the Principality will remain independent even without a male heir).

For a long time, Monaco had no income taxes and was a tax haven for wealthy foreigners and international corporations. This caused a unique thing about Monaco's population: most of its residents are not native - in fact, only about 1 in 5 people are native Monegasques. After a long dispute with France, Monaco started to impose income taxes on all of its residents who are not born there. Its natural citizens are forbidden from entering casinos, but to make up for it, they do not have to pay any income taxes.

3. Nauru

Size: 8 sq. mi (21 km²)
Population: 13,005 (2005 estimate)
Location: Western Pacific Ocean

Nauru [ wiki] is the world's smallest island nation, the smallest independent republic, and the only republic in the world without an official capital.

Nauru only has one significant source of income: phosphates from thousands of years' worth of guano or bird droppings. This proved to be both a boon and a bane for Nauruans - for a long time, its residents enjoyed a relatively high level of income as the country exported its phosphate like there's no tomorrow.

The government employed 95% of Nauruans, and lavished free medical care and schooling for its citizens. Most didn't take advantage of this offer: only one-third of children went on to secondary school. The adults didn't really work, either - office hours were flexible and the most popular pastime was drinking beer and driving the 20-minute circuit around the island. For a while, Nauru was a paradise - for a brief moment in 1970s, Nauruans were even amongst the richest people on the planet.

Nothing lasts forever and sure enough, Nauru's phosphate reserves soon dried up and left 90% of the island as a barren, jagged mining wasteland. Wasteful investments (like buying hotels only to leave them to rot) and gross incompetence by the government (former presidents used to commandeer Air Nauru's planes for holidays, leaving paying customers stranded on the tarmac!) didn't help either.

As if that's not bad enough, Nauru is also beset by obesity problem. Decades of leisurely lifestyle and high consumption of alcohol and fatty foods have left as many as 9 out of 10 people overweight! Nauru also has the world's highest level of type 2 diabetes - over 40% of its population is affected.

So now, Nauruans are poverty-stricken and fat - but they are trying to turn things around. With no natural resource left, in the 1990s, Nauru decided to become a tax haven and offered passports to foreign nationals for a fee. This attracted the wrong kind of money (but a lot of it): the Russian mafia funneled over $70 billion to the tiny island nation. Things got so bad that most big banks refused to handle transactions involving Nauru because of money laundering problems.

This led Nauru to another extraordinary money-making scheme: it became a detention camp for people applying for asylum to Australia!

4. Tuvalu

Size: 9 sq. mi. (26 km²)
Population: 10,441 (2005 estimate)
Location: South Pacific

Tuvalu [wiki] is basically a chain of low-lying coral islands, with its highest elevation being 16 feet or 5 meters above seal level. With total land area of just 9 square miles, Tuvalu is not only a teeny tiny island in the Pacific Ocean, it may not even exist in the next 50 years if sea level continue to rise (a controversial claim, nonetheless there were evacuation plans to New Zealand and other Pacific Islands). Even if the sea level does not rise, other problems such as population growth and coastal erosion still make Tuvalu a very vulnerable country.

During World War II, thousands of American troops were stationed on the islands of Tuvalu and the island became an Allied base. Airfields were quickly constructed and after the war, abandoned. In fact, today rusting wrecks can be found on the islands, a constant reminder of its role in the War.

Today, Tuvalu also derives income from renting out its Internet country code top-level domain .tv, as it is the abbreviation of the word 'television' . This scheme got off to a rocky start (the original company who tried to do it failed to raise the necessary funds), but finally proved to be the largest source of income for the country.

5. San Marino

Size: 24 sq. mi. (61 km²)
Population: 28,117 (2005 estimate)
Location: North-central Italy near the Adriatic coast.

With the formal name of The Most Serene Republic of San Marino [wiki], it's not surprising that San Marino has got lots of charms. Founded in AD 301 by a Christian stonecutter named (what else) Marino (or Marinus, depending on who you ask), who along with a small group of Christians, was seeking escape from religious persecution, San Marino is the world's oldest republic.

Its history belies its simple motto: "Liberty." Indeed, San Marino was such a good neighbor that it was hardly ever conquered by larger enemies (it was briefly conquered in the 1500s and the 1700s, for like a month each). Even when Napoleon gobbled most of Europe, he left San Marino alone, saying it was a model republic!

San Marino takes its government seriously: for such a tiny country, San Marino has a very complex government structure, based on a constitution written in 1600. The country is ruled by an elected Council of 60, who appoints 2 captain regents (from opposing political parties, no less) to administer governmental affairs for six-month term. Talk about preserving liberties through division of authority!

Before World War II, San Marino was amongst the poorest countries in Europe. Today, with more than 3 million tourists visiting every year (half of San Marino's income is derived from tourism), the people of San Marino are amongst the world's richest people.
